How to Fix Error Message “Different SIM Detected” on iPhone 4 / 3GS / 3G After Jailbreaking with JailbreakMe and Activating with a PhoneBook Card

As we all know the new JailbreakMe userland browser based jailbreak doesn’t hacktivate phones so if a user with an unofficial SIM restores / upgrades to the latest 4.0 or 4.0.1 firmware (or any firmware for that matter) then the iPhone will be locked with an “Activation Lock” / Emergency Calls Only Screen.
iPhone Hacker Sherif Hashim found a new way to activate phones without having the original SIM cards but as usual and as expected, Apple found out about the phonebook SIM card trick and blocked this loophole.
If you have activated your iPhone using Phonebook SIM card method, you will probably see this error message “Different SIM Detected” on the lockscreen of your iPhone as you see it in the screenshot below. Don’t worry though, you can fix this issue by following our detail steps listed below.
Step One: First thing you need to do is restore your device (iPhone) to the Original / Official Apple 4.0.1 Firmware through iTunes.
Step Two: Go ahead and ACTIVATE your iPhone by using the Phonebook SIM card method. Watch the video posted below for step by step tutorial.
Step Three: Using the new JailbreakMe 2.0 solution go ahead and Jailbreak your iPhone 4, iPhone 3Gs, or iPhone 3G.
NOTE:JailbreakMe 2.0 is a userland jailbreak for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3G on iOS 4 / 4.0.1, iPod touch on iOS 4, and iPad on iOS 3.2.1. It is a browser based jailbreak, all you have to do is to browse to http://jailbreakme.com from your device (iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad) to jailbreak it.
Step Four: Go ahead and Unlock your iPhone using the Ultrasn0w unlock
NOTE: Ultrasn0w Repo (http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com) is usually added along with the Cydia Package after the Jailbreak and you should see it if you go to the Manage Tab and then tap on Sources.
If you don’t see it in there then go ahead and add it in. Open Cydia, Go to Manage, Sources, Tap on Edit and then Add buttons, then type in this source (http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com) and hit Add Source button. Cydia will now automatically update your sources by following a series of automated steps.
After installation is completed. Search for “ultrasn0w 1.0-1” in Cydia and install it. This app will automatically unlock your iPhone so that you can use it with any carrier. After installation restart your iPhone and you should now have fully unlocked iPhone ready to be used on any GSM Networks / Carriers in the World.
Step Five: Remove and Rplace the Phonebook SIM card with your Unofficial / Unsupported carrier SIM. You should now see the “Different SIM Detected” error.
Step Six: Download i-FunBox for Windows from here and open it on your computer. Connect your iPhone to the computer and let the i-FunBox application detect your device.
Step Seven: Under “Raw File System” you will have to navigate to /private/var/root/Library/ and delete the original Lockdown folder as you see it in the screenshot below. Click on the image to see it in Full Size View
If you are familiar with WinSCP or Cyberduck then you can use those applications as well. Below is a screenshot of the WinSCP application performing the same task. NOTE: I would recommend to use WinSCP if you are comfortable with it. Click on the image to see it in Full Size View
Step Eight: Now Download the patched version of the Lockdown folder from this link here, and place it in the same directory where you deleted the original folder from: i.e. /private/var/root/Library/
That’s all you have to do… Reboot your iPhone, everything should be good to go and you will NOT see the error message “Different SIM Detected” on the lockscreen of your iPhone.
Good Luck
